The Editorial Board of AppLAg: The Journal of Appalachian Local and Agricultural History, a newly launched open access peer reviewed journal that serves as the nexus between the academia and the common man of Appalachia, is seeking high quality, high impact submissions for the Winter 2026 issue. The Journal is also seeking qualified peer reviewers. The Journal’s coverage spans rigorous research to poems and short stories relevant to local or agricultural history in Appalachia.

The Journal especially encourages submissions in the following areas:
  • Family farm histories that discuss the farm’s history in the context of the family who owned it, community in which it existed, and relevant historical period and events
  • Local church and circuit histories, within both local historical and larger ecclesiastical and theological context
  • Local medical science, practice, and hospital histories, within a larger historical context for the local area and within medicine overall; especially major advancements, discoveries, or breakthroughs that took place in Appalachia
  • Historical biographies of notable clergy and physicians who carried out their ministries or practice within Appalachia, within a larger context
  • Interesting or unusual stories that show particular dedication to history of students who have received awards for knowledge of their Appalachian state’s history, culture, and geography, such as the Golden Horseshoe Award in West Virginia
  • Historically significant people, places, and events from Central Appalachia, which the editorial board feels are underrepresented in the scholarly literature
While the Journal welcomes submissions from students, fellows, and faculty, the Journal especially encourages submissions from local historical societies, farm families, clergy, physicians and other healthcare professionals, and longtime local residents within Appalachian communities, who this Journal believes are each uniquely positioned to provide needed nuance. The Journal will consider submissions covering the Appalachian Mountain regions of all states from Maine to Mississippi and make a determination on applicability on a case-by-case basis.

As a fully open access peer review journal, authors retain copyright over their work, and all published content in the _Journal_ is available without cost online.
